The Show Report, 6/12: Okay, we’ve got two questions…

June 12, 2009

Patton Alley Pub’s schedule for tonight left us with a couple of things we wanted to know:

1. What is a Stringduster?

2. Why, exactly, is it infamous?

We searched for answers for both (no, seriously, wtf is a stringduster) and found answers to none. We need no answers for who The Infamous Stringdusters are, though; the bluegrass hotshots have been collecting awards since their debut. Now Patton, in cooperation with High Strung Music, brings the group to Springfield for a show with opening act Cornmeal. Come with $10 in hand and a strong desire to dance. Elsewhere in the scene tonight:

***UPDATED*** The Show Report, 5/15: Know that we have always been down, down

May 15, 2009

311If watching GWAR ravage Remmingtons Downtown wasn’t enough of a blast from the past for local showgoers, tonight’s follow-up raises the bar another notch. 311 takes over The Shrine Mosque with opening act Full Service starting at 8 p.m. We’re prepared to party like it’s 1995 all over again. (Or choose your year of preference from the mid-’90s/late ’90s/early ’00s to party like.) With an early start time, you can hit this show as the starting point to your night, too, which leaves time to get to tonight’s other events:

Reminder: Tonight @ 8, auction for the right to shave J.R. Top’s beard

May 12, 2009

In case you forgot, tonight’s the night. Be at Lindberg’s by 8 p.m. to see Sweetwater Abilene and Pilot Whale creator J.R. Top auction off the chance to shave off his beard onstage. All proceeds will go to the AIDS Project of the Ozarks. It’s not exactly a concert, but who cares? You can be a witness to history–sort of–instead.

News on Friday’s Centro-Matic show

May 6, 2009

centro-matic_2We’re two days from having Texas-based ambient indie group Centro-Matic rolls through Springfield to play the latest Gallery Sounds concert at Randy Bacon Photography Studio & Gallery with Monahans and J.R. Top of Sweetwater Abilene, and now comes some fascinating news that could impact one lucky fan in the crowd. We’ll tell you about it after the break.

De-beard J.R. Top for charity

April 29, 2009

jr-topIt’s been more than a year since anyone has seen J.R. Top‘s chin. When the frontman for Sweetwater Abilene and Pilot Whale (and theremin player for The BoogeyMen) stopped shaving below the chin he had no idea he would wind up with the wavy auburn facial mane he sports today. But grow, curl and wave it did, and the result is arguably the most distinctive feature in the Springfield Music Scene.

Now Mr. Top’s beard is coming off for a good cause, and you can be the one with shears in hand to do it. Find out how after the break.

A quick recording update

April 24, 2009

recordingIt occurs to us that we haven’t done one of these in a while, so we’re going to take a moment and get you up to speed on who is going into the studio and what they’re up to:

GO Magazine Best Band 2009 winner

April 19, 2009

GMA_2009LOGOWith barbecue fighting bouts with rain on and off throughout the afternoon, the weather drove everyone at Rock ‘n’ Ribs, hungry or no, under the music tent for the GO Music Awards Best Band showcase. They picked a good one to pack the room for; Ilijah, Sweetwater Abilene, Cindy Woolf, Jam Room and The Cropdusters each played 30 minutes for the crowd and for the four judges present to score the performances and decide 2009’s GO Magazine Best Band winner. We have the results after the break.

Are you ready for Queen City Shout?

February 5, 2009

qcshoutIt’s finally time again for our month-long extravaganza of local shows known as Queen City Shout at Borders Books (3300 S. Glenstone Ave.). The man behind it all, local music torchbearer Eddie Gumucio, has been hard at work booking bands for weeks to finalize the lineup, and the result is another who’s-who of local talent. (Click here to see the full lineup.)

Remember: Every show is FREE to attend, and all start at an hour (8 p.m. is the latest showtime) that allows an easy transition to the next show or other event you’re planning your evening around, so there is no excuse not to come and see at least some of Springfield’s most diverse collection of fine talent in one place. Your tour of the Springfield Local Musicverse begins tonight at 7 p.m. with Sweetwater Abilene.

We’ll see you there…

Ladies and gentlemen, your Christmas 2009 stocking stuffer

You know, Darkside of the Force isn't on this album, but at least you're thinking...

You know, Darkside of the Force isn't on this album, but at least you're thinking...

Just when you think the holidays are behind you, you realize there are only 357 shopping days until Christmas. Son of a bitch. It’s time to start generating that brainstorm list again. Luckily, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and Sweetwater Abilene have a little something ready to go. They contributed a song to the holiday album Peace On Earth: A charity holiday album, Vol. II, compiled by the folks at Hard To Find a Friend. For the $7.50 the digital album download costs, you get “Don’t Wrap the Puppy” by SSLYBY and Sweetwater, along with tracks from Jason Collett of Broken Social Scene, Via Audio and Anathallo, 22 in all. Now all you have to do is find something feline-themed for Aunt Cathy…

J.R. Top goes solo… for a night

January 7, 2009

jrFresh–if a little sweaty–from his J.R.-A-Thon combo of Pilot Whale and Sweetwater Abilene concerts at The Outland Saturday night comes another chance to see Mr. Top perform: Thursday evening at the Park Central Branch library, a solo set this time around. Yes, J.R. will perform as just J.R.; no assumed names or funny costumes. This time it’s all about the songs, which to us means a chance to see one of the city’s most underestimated songwriters in action. The free show starts at 7 p.m.

Jesse James Wax Museum Cleans House

December 1, 2008

paul‘Tis the season to give, say the convincing voiceover people on our televisions, but Jesse James Wax Museum is up to the challenge and ready to fork over the goods. As we’re reported in these virtual pages before, JJWM is playing one more show in its old guise before reconstituting (i.e. changing members) and beginning a new era. This Thursday night (December 4) is that “final” show, a performance at Randy Bacon Photography Studio & Gallery with Washington Irving, Sweetwater Abilene and St. Louis’s Gentleman Auction House.

3 Questions With Kesha: Sweetwater Abilene’s J.R. Top

October 21, 2008

As a GO Music Awards “Best Band” finalist and iTunes essentials choice, Sweetwater Abilene has a history of doing things on its own terms and gaining recognition for it. Guest writer Lakesha Bailey sat down with the band’s driving force, J.R. Top, for another of her “3 Questions” interviews that, if our count is right, turned into seven questions… and that’s just what she sent in. J.R. is always a man with opinions and the conviction to speak them. His thoughts on Springfield music, the songs that affect him, telling bands they suck and the mysterious whereabouts of “Shake the Che” follow after the break.

October 17, 2008

Senators McCain and Obama: May we present your future cabinet members...
