FREE music at the Ozark Empire Fair: Palen Music Center’s local stage

July 31, 2009

Sure, there’s a band performing every night at the Grandstand Stage during the Ozark Empire Fair, but you didn’t think the rest of the day would be all Ferris wheels and funnel cakes, did you? The Fair crowd is an audience too large not to spotlight local music in front of, and it turns out Palen Music Center is answering the call with a FREE concert stage near the main entrance throughout the Fair’s 10 days. Wanna know who you’ll get to rock out to between sessions of knocking rubber duckies over with a water gun? Read the full schedule after the break.

The Show Report, 7/23: Homecoming in July

July 23, 2009

Tonight brings two Springfield residents–one past, one present–back to the city for a big show. Future Leaders of the World, fronted by onetime Springfield resident Phil Taylor and the band responsible for this hit song, headlines The Outland Ballroom tonight with Formant, Assembly Line Gods and Glass Bottom Boat Ride. Also back in town is FLOW bassist and Formant guitarist Erik McGreevy, who will be doing double duty during the last two sets of the night. It’s a triumphant return for both men, each of whom has strong ties to the city and both of whom have worked hard to make the return of FLOW a success. So consider tonight’s show a celebration of sorts, and prepare to party accordingly. We’ll be there, along with the crew from Z 106.7 FM and Ozarks Live Productions, and we all like talking music over a beer. Find us and partake.

The Show Report, 6/4: The Storyline continues

June 4, 2009

Like sands through the hourglass… wait, that’s a little too soap-opera for this occasion. It’s a big night for Storyline, but not a night for melodrama. Instead, the local power-pop band plays The Outland Ballroom tonight for its CD release party, along with opening act Escape From Maya. (If you haven’t heard the band’s new EP Welcome Home, by the way, it’s quite the enjoyable listen.) The rest of your live-music Thursday, of course, is after the break.

Album Review: Welcome Home, by Storyline

June 2, 2009

Though it’s really only 50% new–three tracks appeared on the band’s previously distributed demo–Welcome Home is a, ahem, welcome step forward for Storyline, and further proof that the band is not One Star Story Mach II.

The good news keeps coming in for local power-pop-rock group Storyline. Not only has the band, formerly known (with a couple different members) as One Star Story, put together a new album called Welcome Home and a spot performing at the Cornerstone Music Festival, but the band now has a CD release party at The Outland Ballroom forthcoming. The show is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, the day after Welcome Home hits store shelves. More details to come.

Storyline prepares debut EP

April 1, 2009

We’ve had Storyline‘s demo for at least a couple of months now, and it sounds polished enough (far more than most demos) that we often forget that it is just a three-song demo. The band, however, does not forget, and the group formerly known as One Star Story has been hard at work in the studio rounding out additional tracks to make a full-fledged recording they can sell. Sell it they will, and you can find more information–including where and how to get it–and a brief promo vid after the break.

Rock Talk (2/8/09) Eddie Gumucio, Storyline

February 9, 2009

Eddie Gumucio stops in to spin some solo stuff, get bullied into a reunion with one of his former bands, talk about his current group The Electrics, and talk all about the awesome FREE month-long concert series you might have heard of called The Queen City Shout. (Looooooonnnnnng Breeeeeeaaaaaaaathththththth)

We were also joined by Storyline. Storyline consists of former members of former Springfield rockers One Star Story. The pop rockers have a sweet sound, a chick singer that’s pretty damn good, and a drummer named Geno that can’t talk into the microphone haha (Just kidding man. Say “Hi” to ya mutha fo’ me!).

Not only this but a Lindberg’s grand opening recap. (more…)

A One Star Story no more: Meet Storyline

January 7, 2009

We were intrigued when we received an introductory email from Storyline, a new local band harnessing the melodic qualities of pop in a rock package. Then we noticed the members’ names; three-fifths of the band consists of members of the now-defunct Christian rock group One Star Story. Geno Valloni, Bryant Babbitt and Zack Person have regrouped with vocalist Ashley Morgan and bassist Mike Duvall for the new group. Although its sound is a little poppier than OSS, fans of the old group will likely take to this band straight away. Those new to either group who are down hooky music written with feeling should give it a try. The band’s first show in Springfield will be February 12 at Sparrows; we’re interested to see how they sound onstage. In the meantime, give them a listen here and see what you think for yourself.
