FourFourFest 2009: Some thoughts

September 21, 2009

Phew. What a day. FourFourFest 2009 had everyone playing in the rain over the course of the day and night, but the crowds turned out nonetheless to see some of the best music Springfield has to offer in a variety of genres. While Mother Nature was pretty cranky, everyone at ground level seemed surprisingly chipper and cooperative. In all, it was a 21-hour day that took months to prepare for and that, in spite of its, um, dampness, was a pretty damn good party. There wasn’t a lot of time to stop and smell the roses while in the thick of things, but I stowed away a few impressions from it all and you can find them after the break.

Rock Talk (9/13/09): FourFourFest compilation preview with guest hosts Johan from Black Box Revue and Toad from Cropdusters

September 14, 2009

So…if you haven’t heard yet, we’re throwing a freakin’ block party on South Ave. between Walnut and McDaniel this Saturday from 11am–11pm with 18 bands, DJ tent all day, food, and more! We’re also tying in a compilation CD featuring 16 of the acts performing (available for only $5 at festival!).

This week on Rock Talk, we preview the compilation in its entirety along with our co-hosts and festival headliners, Johan from Black Box Revue and Toad from Cropdusters (we also feature some great music from our two headliners as well) 🙂

Listen in now…and buy the compilation at the fest!

FourFourFest 2009: Local music gets its day with 18 bands on South Street, 2 stages, all day…FREE

September 3, 2009

Local music, now is your time. You ask for something big for local music and here it is. We took submissions for two weeks back in July and had hoped there would be a lot of interest in the 16 spots available for the event’s performers and on its accompanying for-charity compilation CD. The results were even better than we could have hoped for. More than 50 bands sent material in, making the already unsavory job of whittling down bands we like that much more difficult. After a lot of careful consideration, we believe we’ve put together an outdoor all-local music festival representative and worthy of The Springfield Scene.

We’re shutting down South Street for an entire day between McDaniel and Walnut on Saturday, September 19. We’re putting 2 stages and a DJ tent on it to run from roughly 11:30am–11:00pm with music going all day. There will be food available and cool sponsors showing you what they’re all about. There will also be a few bars open all day as well to serve as beer gardens (being that you can’t have alcohol on a public street thanks to Springfield’s open container law). Regardless, this will be a day full of fun and music with 18 bands + DJ’s spinning all day, on South Street and best of all…its free.

IT BEGINS: Submissions for FourFourFest 2009 begin NOW

July 6, 2009

We’ve been looking forward to this since, well, November 16–the day after the first FourFourFest took place. The first festival was a nine-venue pub crawl that was equal parts fantastic, positive scene moment and learning experience. We can honestly say the ripple effects have been felt ever since, which is enticement to do it again, and better. Less than a year later, work has already begun in earnest on the second edition of the event. To get the quick-hit version, it goes like this:

1. We’re holding it earlier this year, on September 19.

2. It will be a single-location outdoor festival, not a pub crawl.

3. It will coordinate with a compilation CD which includes all of the performing artists, part of the proceeds of which will go to charity.

We want to start getting bands involved, both to save the date for the show and to begin readying said compilation CD. Ready to enter the rabbit hole? Click the link below and get the full details.
