More info on upcoming scene unity show

May 6, 2009

holdinghandsWhen the guys from Roots of Mankind got in touch with us about putting together a barrier-breaking show for the local music scene, it reminded us of the “Springfield Bands Holding Hands” meetings  of a few years ago. Now comes word of the important difference: This show is a reality. All of the details are nailed down, including the list of performers, and we have it all after the break.

With the weather steadily warming up, it’s time to start thinking about outdoor activities again. Local music will get its outdoor moment(s) in the sun beginning with the first Friday in June. The Urban Districts Alliance is preparing the latest addition of its Sounds on the Square concert series, a collection of shows taking place every Friday and Saturday evening in June and July. Shows begin at 5 p.m. on Fridays and 7 p.m. Saturdays, with performances continuing until 10 p.m. Artists are being finalized at this time, so we’ll update you soon with a full list of artists, along with their dates and times. In the meantime, close your eyes and imagine a sun-soaked concert stage right on Park Central Square. It’s only a month away.

With the recent emergence of local country- and roots-rock-influenced artists, Springfield may just be in for its perfect show booking. Illinois garage-roots-rock group Backyard Tire Fire is confirmed for a concert at Lindberg’s June 24 with opening act Mark Bilyeu. Springfield actually marks the last of three stops for Bilyeu as BTF’s opener, the others taking place in Arkansas and Oklahoma. We await details on ticket costs and doors times, but this is certainly a show fans of acts such as The Cropdusters and The Bootheel will not want to miss.

Don’t believe us? Watch the vid after the break and see what you think.

Matthew Darkly breaks free of the studio. Shows coming in June.

April 30, 2009

md-brokendownorgansUntil now, Moodring Records artist Matthew Darkly was an on-record-only group, releasing a slew of demos that you can listen to or download on the Moodring Records site. However, in recent months Rugs singer Matt Dampier–the brains behind Matthew Darkly–has worked closely with Rugs guitarist/co-songwriter/Moodring honcho Eric Schuchmann to both record a full-length album and prepare the Matthew Darkly project for live performance. The time has come to take the group out of the studio, and we’ll tell you where and when you can finally see it after the break.

The Infamous Stringdusters coming to Patton Alley Pub

April 27, 2009

stringdustersWe’d begun to wonder what happened to Patton Alley Pub’s plan to bring nationally touring acts through the lovable Patton Avenue bar. They seemed to be on to something after bringing Split Lip Rayfield to Springfield, then after one more national Patton Alley seemed to concentrate on the local–props for that–while the national-act agenda went low-pro.

Well, perhaps it has awakened. (more…)

New music from Holstein–and it’s acoustic!

April 8, 2009

With a new album, Blood On James River, on the way in a little more than two months, it would make sense for the group to lay low for a bit while it puts the finishing touches on its latest labor of love. Instead, the indie-rock group appears to be doing the opposite; not only is it booking more shows in the weeks leading up to the CD release, it is releasing never-before-heard music as an online exclusive on the band’s MySpace page. The new song, titled “Inside Out,” could be the first of several acoustic tracks to watch for, if the band’s MySpace blog is to be believed. So enjoy the new tune and keep an eye out for more to come, online and, in June, on record.

More Ha Ha Tonka album details emerge

March 25, 2009

hahatonkaWe have an unfortunate confession to make: We didn’t get to see Ha Ha Tonka perform at South By Southwest last week. The band performed as part of the Bloodshot Records label showcase Saturday in Austin, but attending an official label showcase requires money out the wazzoo for the official get-into-all-the-official-stuff wristband, and our wazzoo just wouldn’t accommodate.

We have, however, learned a couple of fresh details about the band’s forthcoming summer album release. Make appropriate use of your mouse or laptop touchpad on the link below to find out for yourself.

New Holstein album coming June 27

March 25, 2009

It’s time for Holstein to emerge again. After releasing an emotionally wrenching yet superb EP last year and playing a gaggle of shows including FourFourFest in November, the band went underground to record a new album and load up for the next step. We got word last night on what all that involves, and, naturally, we divulge after some light clicking on the colored words below.

Get your band on Wakarusa 2009(?)

December 17, 2008
Okay, it's not exactly Sharks v. Jets--we hope--but expect the competition for Wakarusa spots to be intense.
