December 10, 2008

gxlastshowWe reported to you last week that Commercial Street music venue Ground Xero would close its doors for good after its New Year’s Eve party in a few weeks. Today we’ve received word of what bands are scheduled to appear: Wisconsin industrial metal group Cynergy 67 and Peru’s Reaxion Guerilla. The last show will cost $5 and is open only to those 21 and over, as with all GX shows. Doors open at 9 p.m. Ring in the new year, ring out a local-music supporter. This might be a good time to shop for that new leather/latex outfit you’ve had your eye on…

Happy New Year? Ground Xero to close 1/1/09

December 5, 2008

gxWe heard from the boys in Knife*Death about this last night, and after checking on it with manager Zac Oxford it turns out to be true: Ground Xero, Commercial Street’s last active music venue, will close January 1 of next year. The bar’s last night will be its New Year’s Eve party. Ground Xero’s show calendar still lists the New Year’s Eve show performers at “TBA,” so expect details to come soon on that. In the meantime, we’re just given more evidence that Commercial Street, as an entertainment (and particularly live music) destination, is dead.

Ground Xero lives up to its name Wednesday. Get ready for Green Jelly!

green-jelly-concert-small…by which we don’t mean some icky past-expiration-date food, but rather the mid-’90s rock phenomenon that will finally return to grace a Springfield stage. If you’re new to the band, it’s a comedy metal/punk group that has been around since the early ’80s (previously known as Green Jello), but got its “big break” when a radio station played “Three Little Pigs” as a joke in 1992. A spot at MTV’s Headbangers Ball followed, and the rest is history, you might say.

It’s especially worth noting the band’s legacy; the band laid the foundation for later acts such as Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.

They broke up years later, but are on a 135-date reunion tour this year… which happens to be coming to Ground Xero this Wednesday night. “Epic” does not begin to describe this development. If you don’t already have tickets, chances aren’t very good that you can change that, but we highly suggest calling 417-869-4960 to find out. If you need more incentive, click the link below.
