Future Leaders of the World return September 22

It’s nice when a touring band makes a point of coming to a stop on its schedule twice in one tour, and such is the case with Future Leaders of the World. When the band reformed in the summer, it made Springfield one of its early destinations with a show in July, and now it’s announced the group will be back for a show Tuesday, September 22 at Nathan P. Murphy’s. It’s another chance for the group to play to what is effectively a home audience, as guitarist Erik McGreevy hails from Springfield and singer Phil Taylor lived and worked in the city for a time and comes back often. The benefit to them is seeing familiar faces and adding another stop as they roll through Missouri; the benefit to you is getting to see a rocking set, as anyone who saw their last Springfield gig at The Outland Ballroom will likely attest (see videos from the show here). Opening will be McGreevy’s hometown band, Formant and another act to be announced. Since this show is on a Tuesday, it will be earlier than normal. Doors at 7:30 with the show starting at 8pm. This show is ALL AGES.

The Show Report, 7/23: Homecoming in July

July 23, 2009

Tonight brings two Springfield residents–one past, one present–back to the city for a big show. Future Leaders of the World, fronted by onetime Springfield resident Phil Taylor and the band responsible for this hit song, headlines The Outland Ballroom tonight with Formant, Assembly Line Gods and Glass Bottom Boat Ride. Also back in town is FLOW bassist and Formant guitarist Erik McGreevy, who will be doing double duty during the last two sets of the night. It’s a triumphant return for both men, each of whom has strong ties to the city and both of whom have worked hard to make the return of FLOW a success. So consider tonight’s show a celebration of sorts, and prepare to party accordingly. We’ll be there, along with the crew from Z 106.7 FM and Ozarks Live Productions, and we all like talking music over a beer. Find us and partake.

Rock Talk 7/19 with Fern, The Radiance Effect and Future Leaders of the World

July 21, 2009

kzrqrocktalklogo1Chances are, if you read that list of guests, that you fall into one of two camps:

1. “Who the heck is Fern?”

2. “Whoa. Hold up. Fern was on the show?! I remember when I saw them play (insert show lineup here)! Are they back together or something?”

We’ll answer those in order:

1. Fern was a local alternative-rock group from the middle and late ’90s that rose to considerable prominence and opened for big-ticket touring acts when they came to Springfield. The resulting exposure netted the band a record contract. The band split up in 2002 when drummer Jay Sandidge left the group.

2. Yes. They were on Rock Talk on Z 106.7.

3. They are back together, and playing at Randy Bacon Photography Studio & Gallery July 25 (aka this Saturday) with The Republic Tigers.

We were also lucky enough to catch The Radiance Effect on a once-in-a-blue-moon day off while in Springfield and duly took advantage since they have another once-in-a-blue-moon event coming up: a show in their hometown (in August, details TBA) and a new album (due out in August). Finally, we caught up with Phil Taylor of Future Leaders of the World as the band prepped in New Orleans for its upcoming tour, which includes a stop in Springfield at The Outland Ballroom this Thursday night with Formant, Assembly Line Gods and The Final Piece. It was a big night, and we’ve got the whole thing for you to listen to after the break.

Future Leaders of the World returns to Springfield

June 18, 2009

Some may remember Future Leaders of the World from their huge 2004 hit “Let Me Out.” They reached top 10 on Billboard and thanks to the disintegrating record industry, they faded away. Phil Taylor (he pretty much IS Future Leaders of the World) has gone on to do A LOT of great things including starting a new band based out of Benton, AR called Machina with former Evanescence guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray. Phil also started a production company (Phil Taylor Productions), with which he produced a number of Springfield, MO acts including Tara James, Cinemascope and The Horizon is After Us. Phil and John also started RedRoom Studios. So, with a new band, production company, and recording studio going…he also started managing a few bands and booking for The Mustang Agency. Yeah, he’s a pretty busy guy.

On top of all this, he’s also been working on new Future Leaders music and spent most of the past 6 months recording the new Future Leaders album, titled “Reveal,” at The Brewery Studios in Seattle, WA. Having gotten the chance to hear a number of the tracks from the upcoming album…this stuff is REALLY freakin’ good. Lucky for us, FLOW is hitting Springfield in July…details after the jump.

Rock Talk: (5/3/09) Future Leaders of the World, Glass Bottom Boat Ride, Screwtape Letters, & KORN BOTB roundup

May 4, 2009

kzrqrocktalklogo1

We had a packed 2 hours on Rock Talk this week. First off, Phil Taylor of Future Leaders of the World (of “Let Me Out” fame) stopped by while he was in town to give us an exclusive listen to a track off the new Future Leaders album. After that, Glass Bottom Boat Ride stopped in and talked about their upcoming Dead Day show next Friday that is doubling as a DVD shoot. They also rock us with some acoustic tracks as well. After them, The Screwtape Letters stopped in and showed us some of their new music from their upcoming album and plug their upcoming “fund raiser” show next weekend. Last and not least, we play a song from every band battling it out next weekend at the battle to open for KORN. 7 local rock/metal bands dukin’ it out for the right to open for KORN.

Tons of fun and great music! Listen in after the break.
