FREE music at the Ozark Empire Fair: Palen Music Center’s local stage

July 31, 2009

Sure, there’s a band performing every night at the Grandstand Stage during the Ozark Empire Fair, but you didn’t think the rest of the day would be all Ferris wheels and funnel cakes, did you? The Fair crowd is an audience too large not to spotlight local music in front of, and it turns out Palen Music Center is answering the call with a FREE concert stage near the main entrance throughout the Fair’s 10 days. Wanna know who you’ll get to rock out to between sessions of knocking rubber duckies over with a water gun? Read the full schedule after the break.

The Filthy Thirds’ Stone Dead, now on Moodring Records

May 26, 2009

TFT-stone-deadLater this week, local British-wave-inspired metal act The Filthy Thirds will celebrate its last hurrah with one last performance at Lindberg’s on Commercial Street. As one more “thank you” to fans–or as a primer for the uninitiated, depending on how you look at it–the band’s album Stone Dead is now available for FREE download in its entirety on Moodring Records’ website, which you can reach by clicking on the link. Of course, for those feeling a little lazier the album (or just individual songs)–can be streamed from the site as well. Since we have doubts that the album will ever see another pressing, though, we suggest downloading. After that, you have just four days of thrash practice before the real thing May 30. Be ready.

New Music Monday: “Sleepwalking” by Bottlefish now available for FREE

May 25, 2009

sleepwalking-copyIf you got to listen to last night’s edition of Rock Talk on Z 106.7 FM, you heard a couple of never-before-heard tracks from Bottlefish, one recorded at Lou Whitney’s The Studio for the band’s upcoming EP and another performed live in the Z studios. The recorded track, titled “Sleepwalking,” was put on Bottlefish’s website for free download this morning, and we’re told it will be available until the finished EP is ready to release. It’s an incredible song, one of the best new tracks we’ve heard come from the scene this year, and one you’ll want to take the time to go and get, especially at no cost. You can find it by clicking here.

More shredding than a cover-up scheme coming to Springfield Music

May 4, 2009

mab_flyerRecognized (and voted-for) by guitar magazines and their readers as one of the greatest metal-guitar players to ever walk the Earth, Michael Angelo Batio is something of a phenomenon unto himself. Not sure who we’re talking about? Watch this video. Now the man who pioneered the over-under technique in guitar playing (has anyone seriously attempted it since?) brings his extraordinary fret-playing skills to Springfield Music for a clinic on guitar playing this Thursday (May 7) at 7 p.m. Best of all, entrance is absolutely FREE. Who better to teach you how to devour a good metal riff than the ex-Nitro axeman who taught himself how to be ambidextrous so he could play two guitars at once?! Expect a full room for this event, though; since it’s first-come, first-served, you’ll want to be there early.

Free music from The Seed

April 23, 2009

theseedIn honor of Earth Day–or the day after Earth Day, anyway–The Seed has decided to hook up the masses with a free preview of its next album, Homemade Dub 2: A Recipe For Disaster. (Remember, they’re releasing two albums this year, the already-released Big Outside and Homemade Dub 2 on July 31.) So you get two FREE tracks to download from one of local music’s bands to watch. How can anyone turn that down? Click the link below and we’ll tell you where to get them.

College Night comes to Commercial Street

February 18, 2009

DeRosh, I would love to check out more of these concerts you keep writing about, but honestly, after all those late-night pizzas and kegger admission fees, I’m broke, dude.

Pish posh. Who needs money to hear music? You won’t in Springfield, at least not tomorrow night (2/19). Drury’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), specifically its Make It Project for teaching students how to prosper in the music business, is hosting College Night at two Commercial Street locations. Best of all, it doesn’t have to cost you a dime. Details after the break.
