Sacrificial Lambs: Lineup announced for the next battle of the bands

September 30, 2009

LOG_Gwar_ShrineMosqueIt seems everyone discovered a winning formula with this summer’s Korn show at The Shrine Mosque: Book a big-ticket national act, set up a battle of the bands among big-drawing locals to determine the opener, apply revenue from the battle of the bands to help offset the cost of the big-ticket national act. The formula returns October 17 with another battle of the bands–this time at The Outland Ballroom, as opposed to Remmingtons Downtown–to determine the opening act for Lamb Of God when the band comes to the Shrine with Gwar and Job For A Cowboy November 7. The lineup? Glad you asked. Peep it after the break.

The Show Report, 8/3: Primer 55, yo

August 3, 2009

Tonight Ozarks Live Productions brings Primer 55 and its unusual mix of rock, punk and hip hop to The Outland Ballroom with openers Extreme Hate Frequency, Six Shots Till Dawn and Fiera. Been a minute since you’re heard news from Primer 55? The band has reportedly been hard at work on a new album since January, tentatively titled The New American Gangsters, which does not have an official release date yet. Fans don’t need to wait to hear new tunes, though, as the band has posted three tracks from the upcoming album (which may or may not keep that working title) on its MySpace page: “Picture Frame,” “Flexin” and “You Can’t F*** With Me.” The last is an interesting sample/reworking of the guitar riff from Iron Butterfly’s “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”–not the first (or best) application we’ve heard, but solid and played on their own instruments, which should count for some bonus points. It should rock the house live, though, and that’s exactly what we’re anticipating tonight.

Also on your live music horizon:

* BringYourGreenHat at Ebbets Field

* Shawn Eckels and Marcus Chatman at Coyote’s Adobe Cafe

* Trash Angels at Dennis’ Place

* Sylabol7 DJs at The High Life Live Martini Lounge

The Show Report, 5/23: Ditch the grill and cooler

May 23, 2009

Yeah, yeah, it’s Memorial Day weekend, blah diddy blah blah, cookin’ out, blah blah, drinkin’ beers, blah blah. Oh, certainly, we get it, but here’s the thing: As we write this it’s pouring rain, so there’s no grilling out until at least tomorrow. Grilling in can wait, too, as long as there are these alternatives:

* HeartPunch and The Honkytonk Renovators at Lindberg’s. It’s the second-ever show for HeartPunch, the supergroup with members of The Domino Kings, The Skeletons, Fuller’s Earth and Barefoot Revolution, and tonight’s show brings a neat extra wrinkle: super-limited-edition T-shirts. Look for them during the show. Of course, The Honkytonk Renovators are fast becoming one of the most in-the-know good shows in the city–we’re told their Monday-night Pappy’s shows require arriving more than an hour early to get a table–so arriving early to this one is a must.

* House Show! FREE! 820 E. Missouri with New Madrid, Nora and Gnoll, Spoke Pants of the Flowering Skillet and We Named the Dog Indiana!

* John Henry & The Engine, Truett & The Traitors and Wes Wingate & Hillary Scott at The Outland

* Offset, Extreme Hate Frequency, I Don’t Wanna Die In Texas and Break the Barrier at The Outland Ballroom. Two particular points of interest with this show: It’s Offset’s first concert in more than six months, and Extreme Hate Frequency is recording a live album at this concert.

* Jalopy at Patton Alley Pub

* Eddie’s Blues Train at Nathan P. Murphy’s

* Logic Control of Mister Deuce at The High Life Live Martini Lounge. Didn’t get enough with one night of dancing this weekend? Come here for more!

Rock Talk 5/17, ft. Assembly Line Gods, Extreme Hate Frequency, John Henry & The Engine

May 19, 2009

kzrqrocktalklogo1We rocked it hard on Z 106.7’s Rock Talk this week. Really hard. Local metal group Assembly Line Gods dropped in early and happened to bring instruments in hand. Sweet, we thought; how ’bout a couple songs? They obliged with a couple of outstanding acoustic renditions of tunes you’ll recognize if you’ve seen them live. Extreme Hate Frequency followed that up with some album tracks and talk of opening for Stemm this Saturday night at The Outland Ballroom. Finally, John Henry of John Henry & The Engine joined us via telephone line to discuss influences, the joys of playing Springfield and the next opportunity to do so–this Saturday at The Outland. To put a nice bow on the evening, we wrapped up with Four from The FourFour, a very non-metal collection of songs by artists breaking up, playing festivals, rockin’ old school and, well, that we just really like. Give it all a listen after the break.

This weekend has been a whirlwind of activity, with Korn confirmed at The Shrine Mosque for May 29 and a battle of the bands settled upon as the means to decide the local opener for the show. We’ve received the final word on the acts that will compete for the big prize, and we have the full list after the break.

Who’s opening for Korn? Decide yourself!

April 11, 2009

Word just came to us that the local opener for the May 29 Korn show at The Shrine Mosque will be decided by a battle of the bands at Remmington’s Downtown on May 9. This news came our way courtesy of local metal group Extreme Hate Frequency, who is already soliciting votes for show night, so we assume they are one of the bands involved in the contest. No word yet on who else will take part, but as soon as we find out you will too.

The Girls of Extreme Hate Frequency, coming to a calendar near you… and you can be one

March 16, 2009

pin_up_girl_by_havokart1It’s not often a band, even one of national repute, decides to create its own calendar complete with calendar girls. (We think Motley Crue might have done so, but it wasnt for distribution, if you know what we mean.) However, Extreme Hate Frequency has taken on the challenge–er, “challenge”–and is currently holding auditions for girls 18 and older who would like consideration for Miss January on through Miss December. One of the final 12 will also be the calendar’s cover model. The “Girls of EHF” calendar should be out late this year and apply toward 2010. If you want to take your shot at a spot in the calendar, professional photo shoot by In Focus Photography and all, email You could become local metal’s next pin-up girl.
