The Show Report, 8/3: Primer 55, yo

August 3, 2009

Tonight Ozarks Live Productions brings Primer 55 and its unusual mix of rock, punk and hip hop to The Outland Ballroom with openers Extreme Hate Frequency, Six Shots Till Dawn and Fiera. Been a minute since you’re heard news from Primer 55? The band has reportedly been hard at work on a new album since January, tentatively titled The New American Gangsters, which does not have an official release date yet. Fans don’t need to wait to hear new tunes, though, as the band has posted three tracks from the upcoming album (which may or may not keep that working title) on its MySpace page: “Picture Frame,” “Flexin” and “You Can’t F*** With Me.” The last is an interesting sample/reworking of the guitar riff from Iron Butterfly’s “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”–not the first (or best) application we’ve heard, but solid and played on their own instruments, which should count for some bonus points. It should rock the house live, though, and that’s exactly what we’re anticipating tonight.

Also on your live music horizon:

* BringYourGreenHat at Ebbets Field

* Shawn Eckels and Marcus Chatman at Coyote’s Adobe Cafe

* Trash Angels at Dennis’ Place

* Sylabol7 DJs at The High Life Live Martini Lounge

Second Annual Chill Fest coming September 19

May 13, 2009

theseedWhen The Seed throws a party, it doesn’t do so half-heartedly. It’s CD release concert was a monster, and now the plans emerge for the group’s second annual Chill Fest reggae music festival coming in September. Chill Fest’s second year will showcase a stellar collection of local reggae acts, take place at an intriguing new location (for it, anyway) and be all ages, too. We’ll tell you more after the break.

Girl Talk

Tonight brings two artists to Springfield performing here for the first time, both extremely popular in genres that are anything but mainstream. Springfield is on the cutting edge of music culture… on a Tuesday. Forget sombreros, margaritas or any of that Cinco de Mayo stuff. Here’s where the parties are at tonight:

Hmmm… It’s a rainy, cold-ish First Friday… Need something to cure the blahs… Hey, what’s Steve Ewing doing tonight? As luck would have it, the man who fronted The Urge in the ’90s and early ’00s is in town tonight to play The High Life Live Martini Lounge. Nothing like renditions of “Brainless,” “Open All Night” and more to jostle the masses awake.

Once you’re jostled, you’ll want to check out the shows we have for you after the break, too.

The Show Report, 4/27: Hayden will forgive you. We promise.

It's called TiVo. You should use it sometime. Like tonight, for example. And stop staring, perv.

Dude. DeRosh, it’s the season finale of Heroes. I mean, have you seen the last few episodes?! It’s gonna be epic. I can’t go see shows tonight. What will happen to the Petrelli brothers?!?!

You can’t be serious. There’s music to see, for Pete’s sake! (That’s not a Peter Petrelli pun, by the way. Nor was that meant to be alliteration. Damnit, never mind.)

Not only are there top-shelf weekly performances going on in Springfield tonight, there’s a Forever Endeavor Productions show you’ll want to get to as well, in a venue you may not have been to before and may also want to check out. It’s a night loaded with intrigue, and it has nothing to do with whether or not Matt Parkman can get his act together and help save the world. We’ll tell you all about it–shows, not Heroes–after the break.

Rock Talk (3/8), with BringYourGreenHat, Ha Ha Tonka and… a pornographic sandwich?

Somehow, this always happens to us on Z 106.7’s Rock Talk. We talk music, everything’s cool… then… somehow… we go adrift. Apparently we’re hungry people with dirty minds. So-prahse, so-prahse, so-prahse. BringYourGreenHat and Ha Ha Tonka (BOTH playing shows in Springfield this Friday) provided the music talk; the McDonalds menu provided the rest. We’re not gonna get into it here; you’ll just have to listen to understand. When your stomach isn’t turning and you’re not laughing until your spleen dislodges, you’ll hear some tight “groove rock” courtesy of BYGH and some cool SXSW insight (alphabet soup time!) from Lennon of Ha Ha Tonka. Enjoy after the break. Mmmm… chicken…
