I’ve seen dancin’… and that ain’t dancin’

September 25, 2009

MoshThe Blue Room inside of Billiards of Springfield closed recently after a long run as a music venue in the city, taking with it the home of many a hardcore, punk, hip hop and comedy show. Billiards as a whole is now back in the care of a previous manager who wants to return the Blue Room to its previous incarnation as a sports bar. The reaction to the closing in the local music community has ranged from “oh well” to “good riddance,” but regardless of one’s personal feelings about the venue there is an undeniable, and much darker, truth behind The Blue Room’s disappearance. Local music–more specifically its fans–led to the room’s closure. In other words, this is one place where we’ve worn out our welcome.

The Show Report, 8/14: The Shin Kickers return

August 14, 2009

Tonight brings us the second helping of local Social Distortion tribute group The Shin Kickers, playing Lindberg’s in all their punk-meets-greaser glory. Their first appearance was to a packed room of onlookers in the spring as they played Social D’s live album Live at the Roxy, but tonight the band will take on a set list made up of the group’s latter-day material. We’re betting it includes this classic, plus more than a few other tunes instantly recognizable to fans.

The Show Report, 6/20: Tonight, we ride!

June 20, 2009
BigMike

Big Mike Griffin

Tonight’s concert lineup includes a nationally touring act coming to Nathan P. Murphy’s with an affinity for two-wheeled transportation in addition to considerable guitar-playing chops. Big Mike Griffin rolls into Springfield–on a tour bus, in this case, though we suspect the motorcycle custom-built for his almost-seven-foot frame is somewhere in tow–to play the local blues club with opening act Classic Reunion in the latest of Murphys’ Hot Rock & Blues summer concert series.

Elsewhere:

* Speaking of summer concert series, Sounds on the Square resumes on Park Central Square with Nathaniel Carroll (7 p.m.) and Tony Menown and The Expectations (8 p.m.). All shows are FREE and family friendly.

* Cooter Brown at The Outland

* NORML Benefit Show at The Blue Room at Billiards of Springfield

* Roots Of Mankind, The Spacetones and Phases at The Outland Ballroom

* EgoMagnet at The High Life Live Martini Lounge
