We just received word last night of the death of local musician James Guy “Jimmy Guy” Cottengim, a solo artist and songwriter and the father of Stoney Lee and Jody Cottengim, both of local blues band Tripwire and with whom he played as The Cottengim Band. Cottengim was found dead in his home late last week and reportedly died of natural causes. Cottengim, who worked as a Nashville songwriter in the ’70s, is listed in the credits on the Jerry Lee Lewis‘s self-titled 1979 album for writing the song “Number One Lovin’ Man.” A full list of Cottengim’s achievements, in work and in life, can be found in the News-Leader’s obituary of him, which you can read here. Our best wishes go out to the Cottengim family, and Godspeed to a man who gave much to Springfield Music and the people it reaches.
Jimmy Guy Cottengim, 1947-2009
