Have you hugged a soldier today?

by

The calendar may have changed–yay 2009–but the agenda at Nathan P. Murphy’s has not. The bar continues its run of shows to help America’s servicemen and women with a concert Saturday night for the Family Readiness Group. The Family Readiness Group is an organization intended to support the families of soldiers during their time on duty–the wives, husbands and children of the men and women who risk their lives in our best interests every day. All proceeds from Saturday’s show will go toward the organization. (Cover charge, by the way, is $5 if you’re over 21 and $9 if you’re under 21.)

As if the cause wasn’t enough reason to go, check the lineup: Honest Heathen, Bottlefish and the Bobby Gardner Band. Honest Heathen was arguably one of the most resounding successes of FourFourFest; Bottlefish is the latest side project of sort-of-reclusive local music legend Yankton Sothern, a band that takes its cues from the likes of Neil Young and early Wilco; the Bobby Gardner Band is the offshoot of Gardner’s work in local blues-rock group Black Suede. It’s no ordinary collection of talent, and it’s no ordinary show. Come out and support the people who support the men and women who support you.

Wow, Honest Heathen was great. Definitely one of the best new sounds to come out of Springfield in a long time. If you’re a fan of local music, these guys define what it should be.
